Figure from the GATE 2020 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

x-y axes with the parabola y = x^2 drawn from the point (-1, 1) down through the origin (0, 0) and up to the point (2, 4). The curve is labelled C. An arrowhead near (-1, 1) points down along the curve toward the origin, and a second arrowhead on the right branch, beside the label C, points up toward (2, 4), so the curve is traversed from (-1, 1) to (2, 4). Dashed guide lines: a horizontal dashed line at y = 1 from the y-axis to x = -1 with a vertical dashed line from x = -1 on the x-axis up to it; a horizontal dashed line at y = 4 from the y-axis to x = 2 with a vertical dashed line from x = 2 on the x-axis up to (2, 4). Axis tick labels: -1 and 2 on the x-axis, 1 and 4 on the y-axis.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The line integral along the parabola from to is .

Official answer: -3.05 to -2.95Source: Official answer key, GATE 2020 EE (IIT Delhi)

  1. Read the path from the figure: is the arc of from through the origin to . The arrowheads show that direction, so runs from to .

  2. Write out the integrand using :

  3. Parametrise by along the curve: , so .

  4. Substitute:

  5. Integrate along the path:

  6. Check: . The field is not conservative, so the integral depends on the path and has to be taken along the parabola itself. The answer is .

KEY IDEA

For a line integral along , write . Then replace and with and and integrate in from the start point to the end point shown by the arrows. Here , so no potential function exists. The integral cannot be found from the endpoints alone and must be taken along the given curve.

WATCH OUT FOR

Integrating only over the right branch ( from to ), which gives . Other common slips: reversing the direction of travel, which gives ; dropping the minus sign on the term, so the integrand becomes and the answer ; and treating the field as conservative by taking a difference between the endpoints.
