Four points , , , and represent the vertices of a quadrilateral.
What is the area enclosed by the quadrilateral?
ANSWER
The quadrilateral is a square whose diagonals and are each 4 units long, so its area is . Option (C).
Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EC (IIT Kharagpur)
Plot the points. and both lie on the -axis (). and both lie on the line . and are on opposite sides of , and and are on opposite sides of , so segments and cross each other. Two crossing segments cannot both be sides of a quadrilateral, so and are its diagonals and the boundary runs . (The letters are not given in boundary order.)
Diagonal lengths (distance between two points on the same vertical or horizontal line): and .
is vertical and is horizontal, so the diagonals are perpendicular. Both have midpoint , so they bisect each other.
Diagonals that are equal, perpendicular and bisect each other make the quadrilateral a square (a rhombus with equal diagonals).
Area of a quadrilateral with perpendicular diagonals:
Check using a side: , so the area of the square is . This matches option (C).
KEY IDEA
Plot the points first. Two of them lie on a vertical line and two on a horizontal line, and the two segments cross, so they are the diagonals. When a quadrilateral's diagonals are perpendicular, its area is . Here both diagonals are 4 and bisect each other, so the figure is a square of side .
WATCH OUT FOR
Joining the vertices in letter order P, Q, R, S. Segments PQ and RS cross, so that path makes a self-intersecting bow-tie and not the quadrilateral. Taking PQ and RS as sides of length 4 gives 16, which is not an option. Another slip is to use without the factor . People who get the side right can still pick or by mistake, because those are the square's perimeter or twice the side.
