GATE 2022 EC GA Q.3: solution and answer

GATE 2022 · ECGA Q.3 · 1 mark · MCQ

A trapezium has vertices marked as P, Q, R and S (in that order anticlockwise). The side PQ is parallel to side SR.

Further, it is given that, PQ = 11 cm, QR = 4 cm, RS = 6 cm and SP = 3 cm.

What is the shortest distance between PQ and SR (in cm)?

  1. (A)

    1.80

  2. (B)

    2.40

  3. (C)

    4.20

  4. (D)

    5.76

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The shortest distance between PQ and SR is the height of the trapezium, 2.40 cm. The answer is option (B).

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EC (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. The shortest distance between the two parallel sides is the perpendicular height of the trapezium. Drop perpendiculars from S and R onto PQ, meeting it at M and N, so that SRNM is a rectangle and .

  2. The two end pieces of PQ then add up to the difference of the parallel sides: .

  3. Slide the rectangle SRNM out, i.e. move the leg QR a distance of 6 cm along PQ towards P so that it meets the leg SP at S. This leaves a triangle with sides , and base (all in cm). Its height on the base of 5 is the same .

  4. Converse of Pythagoras' theorem: , so this triangle has a right angle between the sides 3 and 4.

  5. Work out the area of this right triangle in two ways: , so .

  6. Check with lengths: let and , with . From the two right triangles SMP and RNQ, , so . Since , this gives , hence and . Both are positive, so the feet M and N do lie on PQ as assumed. Then (and also ), so .

  7. The shortest distance between PQ and SR is , which is option (B).

KEY IDEA

Take the rectangle between the parallel sides out of the trapezium. The two legs (3 and 4) and the difference of the parallel sides (11 - 6 = 5) make a 3-4-5 right triangle, and that triangle has the same height as the trapezium. Working out its area two ways gives .

WATCH OUT FOR

The options include two numbers from the working. 5.76 is , so it is what you get if you forget the square root. 1.80 is the end piece PM, not the height. Some students also try the whole length PQ = 11 as the base of the triangle. The base is only the difference 11 - 6 = 5.
