Figure from the GATE 2026 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Three circles, each touching the other two externally. The large circle C1 (label C1 at its lower left) has its centre O1 slightly left of the middle of the figure. A dotted horizontal arrow labelled r1 runs left from O1 to the circle's leftmost point. The medium circle C2 (label C2 at its lower right) sits to the right of C1 and touches it on C1's right side. Its centre O2 is at the same height as O1, and a dotted horizontal arrow labelled r2 runs right from O2 to C2's rightmost point. The small circle C3 (label C3 above it) sits in the notch above the point where C1 and C2 touch, and touches both. Its centre is O3, and a dotted horizontal arrow labelled r3 runs left from O3 to C3's leftmost point. A solid segment joins O1 to O3, running up and to the right through the point where C1 touches C3. A second solid segment joins O3 to O2, running down and to the right through the point where C3 touches C2. A small square at O3 marks the angle O1O3O2 between these two segments as a right angle. O1 and O2 are not joined in the figure.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

, option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 IN (IIT Guwahati)

  1. When two circles touch externally, the distance between their centres equals the sum of their radii. Let .

  2. Apply this to each pair. and . The circles "touch each other", and the figure shows and touching too, so .

  3. Triangle has its right angle at , so the side opposite it, , is the hypotenuse. By Pythagoras:

  4. Expand:

  5. By the quadratic formula:

  6. A radius must be positive. is negative, so take the + sign: . This is option (A).

  7. Check: with , , so the angle at is a right angle. Also is smaller than both and , as drawn.

KEY IDEA

When circles touch externally, the distance between two centres is the sum of their radii. That gives all three sides of triangle in terms of : , and . The right angle at makes the hypotenuse, and Pythagoras then gives a quadratic in .

WATCH OUT FOR

The usual slip is to put the hypotenuse in the wrong place. The right angle is at , so the hypotenuse is , not one of the sides that involve . Other errors are forgetting that and also touch (so ), and picking option (B), , after a sign slip in the quadratic formula. Option (B) is about 3.56 cm, larger than both given radii. That contradicts both the figure and Pythagoras, since the legs and could not then fit a hypotenuse of 3.
