What is the value of ?
ANSWER
The series is geometric with and , so its sum is . The answer is option (D).
Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EC (IIT Guwahati)
Each term is of the one before it: , , , and so on. So this is a geometric series with first term and common ratio .
An infinite geometric series converges when , and its sum is then . Here , so the sum exists.
Check with partial sums: , which is closing in on and stays well below .
So the value is , which is option (D).
KEY IDEA
If every term is a fixed multiple of the one before it and , the infinite geometric series adds up to , where is the first term. Find and first, then use the formula.
WATCH OUT FOR
Using the ratio because the series looks like the familiar . That gives option (A). Another slip is to leave out the leading and add only . Adding the first few terms also shows the answer is below , which rules out (A), (B) and (C).
