GATE 2023 EC GA question 7: A graph of f(x) against x.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2023 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A graph of f(x) against x. A horizontal x-axis runs across the figure, with 9 equally spaced unlabelled tick marks: the centre tick is labelled 0, with 4 ticks to its left and 4 to its right. The label x sits just below the axis to the right of 0. A vertical axis labelled f(x) passes up through 0. A single solid blue curve is drawn, symmetric about the vertical axis. It touches the x-axis only at the origin, where it comes to a sharp V-shaped minimum of value 0. From the origin it rises steeply on each side to a maximum at about half a tick-spacing from the vertical axis (one peak left of it, one right of it, at equal height). Beyond each peak it falls away smoothly, in a bell-shaped tail, towards the x-axis, and is almost touching the axis at the outermost ticks on both ends. The curve is never below the x-axis.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The graph is , option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EC (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Read the graph's features: it is symmetric about the -axis (an even function), , for every , and both as and as .

  2. Test each option for evenness, i.e. . (B) , so it is odd, not even. (D) , which is not equal to . (C) for . Only (A) is even: .

  3. Check the sign at a negative point: at , (B) gives and (D) gives . Both go below the -axis, but the graph never does.

  4. Check the left tail: at , (C) gives and (D) gives . For negative the factor grows without bound, so neither (C) nor (D) can decay to 0 on the left the way the graph does.

  5. Confirm that (A) has every feature: ; and make ; and exponential decay beats polynomial growth, so as .

  6. (A) also has the two humps. For , and , which is zero at . By symmetry the other maximum is at , with as the minimum between them. The figure is a sketch, not drawn to scale: the axis ticks are unlabelled, so the peak positions cannot be checked against a scale, and near the origin , so the true minimum is flat () rather than the sharp point drawn. The question is decided by symmetry, sign and decay, and only (A) has all three.

  7. Hence the graph is , option (A).

KEY IDEA

Match a sketch to a formula by its qualitative features, not by plotting. Here there are three: symmetry (an even function needs ), sign (the curve is never negative) and end behaviour (it decays to 0 on both sides). Only is even, never negative and decaying at both ends, because decays whichever way goes and beats the polynomial factor.

WATCH OUT FOR

Looking only at the right half of the graph, where all four options behave alike (zero at 0, a rise, then decay), and then picking (B) or (C). Test a negative value of : (B) and (D) go negative there, and (C) and (D) blow up because grows as . A second trap is rejecting (A) because the sketch shows a sharp point at the origin while is actually flat there. The figure is only a qualitative sketch.
