GATE 2023 EE GA question 7: A plot of f(x) against x.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2023 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A plot of f(x) against x. A horizontal x-axis runs across the figure with equally spaced tick marks: four ticks to the left of the origin and four to the right (the outermost tick on each side is drawn as a small end bar). The origin is labelled 0 just below and to the right of where the axes cross, and the axis is labelled x below it, to the right of the origin. A vertical axis through the origin is labelled f(x) at its upper left. No numerical values are printed on either axis. The curve (dark blue) is antisymmetric about the origin. At the far left it starts just below the x-axis, very close to zero. Moving right it bends further below the axis and reaches a sharp minimum a short distance left of the origin (about half a tick spacing). It then rises steeply, crosses the axis at the origin, and reaches a sharp maximum a short distance right of the origin (about half a tick spacing) at a height equal to the depth of the minimum. After that it decays smoothly and stays above the x-axis, approaching zero at the far right. The curve is negative for every x < 0, zero at x = 0, positive for every x > 0, and tends to 0 as x goes to plus or minus infinity.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The graph is , which is option (B).

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EE (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Read the features off the graph: ; for and for ; the curve is symmetric about the origin (odd, so ); and as .

  2. Sign test on (A): and , so for every . The graph goes negative for , so (A) is out. (It is also even, not odd.)

  3. Sign test on (C): and , so everywhere. Rejected for the same reason.

  4. Behaviour of (D) for large negative : put with , so as . The graph flattens to 0 on the left instead of falling away, so (D) is out. Check: .

  5. Check (B): , so it is odd. Since , has the same sign as . And , where the exponential in the denominator grows faster than the linear numerator, so on both sides. Every feature matches.

  6. The turning points agree too. For , gives , which is zero only at . It is positive before that point and negative after it, so this is a single maximum. By oddness there is a matching minimum at with the same depth. That gives the single peak and single trough in the figure. The axes carry no numbers, so only the shape is compared, not where the peak sits.

  7. Therefore the graph is , option (B).

KEY IDEA

Match a graph to a formula by testing its visible features one at a time, each of which rules out options: the sign on each side of the origin, symmetry (odd or even), and the limits as . A factor or can never be negative. A factor with no modulus blows up as . Only is odd, has the sign of , and decays on both sides.

WATCH OUT FOR

Picking (D), , because it matches the graph exactly for (there it is the same function as (B)). For negative , grows without bound, so instead of returning to zero. Another slip is to see the modulus in and choose (A) without noticing that can never produce the negative lobe.
