Answer and solution

ANSWER

The LCM of 20, 30 and 50 minutes is 300 minutes, which is 5 hours. The three bells next ring together at 5:00 PM, so the answer is (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EE (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. All three bells ring together again after a time that is a multiple of every period. The first such time is the least common multiple (LCM) of , and minutes.

  2. Prime factorisation: , , .

  3. LCM rule: take the highest power of each prime that appears.

  4. Convert to hours: .

  5. Next time all three ring together: .

  6. Check: , and are all whole numbers. No smaller time works: the smaller multiples of are , and each fails for another bell (, and are not multiples of ; and are not multiples of ). So the answer is (A).

KEY IDEA

Events that repeat every a, b and c minutes coincide again after LCM(a, b, c) minutes. Find it from prime factorisation by taking the highest power of each prime: LCM(20, 30, 50) = 2^2 × 3 × 5^2 = 300 minutes = 5 hours.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the HCF (10 minutes) in place of the LCM. Multiplying the periods (20 × 30 × 50 = 30000 minutes), which gives a common multiple but not the first one. Taking the LCM of only two bells, for example LCM(30, 50) = 150 minutes gives 2:30 PM, which does not suit P because 150 is not a multiple of 20. Adding 300 minutes as if it were 3 hours.
