ANSWER

(D) Funds raised through voluntary contributions on web-based platforms.

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2020 IN (IIT Delhi)

  1. Pick out the key phrases in the passage. The funds come from "a large number of people", who "would be willing to invest", in "smaller amounts", "through web-based platforms".

  2. Rule for reading comprehension: the correct option has to follow from the passage. Any option the passage contradicts is out.

  3. (A) "unwilling contributions": the passage says the people "would be willing to invest", which is the opposite. Eliminate.

  4. (B) "large contributions": the passage says "smaller amounts". The large thing is the number of people, not the size of each contribution. Eliminate.

  5. (C) "coerced contributions": to coerce someone is to force them, and that contradicts "willing". Eliminate.

  6. (D) "voluntary contributions": giving willingly is giving voluntarily, and "on web-based platforms" matches "through web-based platforms". This follows directly from the passage.

  7. Answer: (D).

KEY IDEA

In the passage, \"willing to invest\" means the same as \"voluntary\". All four options repeat \"on web-based platforms\", so the only thing that tells them apart is the word describing the contributions. Test that word against the passage: willing means voluntary, not unwilling or coerced, and \"smaller amounts\" rules out large.

WATCH OUT FOR

Choosing (B) because the passage says \"large number of people\". \"Large\" describes how many people contribute, not how much each one gives. The passage says each person gives \"smaller amounts\".
