Euclidean distance based -means clustering algorithm was run on a dataset of 100 points with . If the points and are both part of cluster 3, then which ONE of the following points is necessarily also part of cluster 3?

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The point that must also be in cluster 3 is , option (D).

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 DA (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. In -means with Euclidean distance, a point belongs to cluster 3 when its nearest centroid is . So cluster 3 is the set .

  2. Expand . The terms cancel, leaving . This is a half-plane, so cluster 3's region is an intersection of half-planes (a Voronoi cell) and is convex.

  3. Both and lie in this convex region, so every point of the segment joining them also lies in it. The segment is .

  4. The midpoint is , which is option (D). So (D) is necessarily in cluster 3, apart from the degenerate case of an exact tie between centroids.

  5. The other options are not guaranteed. Take and put another centroid exactly at the option point . Then , while the distance from to is at least for and , and at least for (distances and ). So both given points stay in cluster 3. But is at distance from its own centroid, so is in a different cluster. Hence (A), (B) and (C) are not necessarily in cluster 3.

KEY IDEA

Each -means cluster is a Voronoi cell, which is convex. Any point on the segment between two members of a cluster is therefore also in that cluster.

WATCH OUT FOR

Picking because it is the origin or the "centre" of the data. The origin is not on the segment between the two points, so a centroid can sit near it and claim it for another cluster.
