GATE 2018 IN question 49: A four-arm bridge drawn as a diamond with top, left, right and bottom nodes.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2018 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A four-arm bridge drawn as a diamond with top, left, right and bottom nodes. Top-left arm (top node to left node): capacitor C1 in parallel with resistor R1. Top-right arm (top node to right node): resistor R2. Bottom-left arm (left node to bottom node): resistor R4. Bottom-right arm (right node to bottom node): the coil under test, inductance Lx in series with its resistance Rx. A detector D is connected across the left and right nodes. An AC source Vs is connected between the top and bottom nodes (drawn to the left of the diamond). This is a Maxwell inductance-capacitance bridge.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

.

Official answer: 221 to 223Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 IN (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Name the arms. The source is connected between the top and bottom nodes and the detector between the left and right nodes. (top to left), (top to right), (left to bottom), (right to bottom). So is opposite , and is opposite .

  2. Balance condition. means the left and right nodes are at the same potential: . This simplifies to (the products of opposite arms are equal). Therefore .

  3. Admittance of the parallel arm: .

  4. Substitute, then equate the real parts and the imaginary parts: Neither result depends on the frequency. This is the Maxwell inductance-capacitance bridge.

  5. Inductance:

  6. Check: , which is a reasonable winding resistance. affects only and does not appear in .

KEY IDEA

This is a Maxwell inductance-capacitance bridge. At balance, . The parallel arm contributes an admittance, so its term turns directly into . That gives , independent of frequency and of .

WATCH OUT FOR

One mistake is using the impedance of the arm instead of its admittance. Another is pairing the wrong arms, for example writing when the detector's position makes opposite . A third is bringing into the inductance formula. Each of these gives a wrong or frequency-dependent . The unit prefixes also cause slips: , which is 222 mH, not 222 H or 22.2 mH.
