GATE 2018 IN Q.47: solution and answer

GATE 2018 · INQ.47 · 2 marks · NAT

The voltage and current drawn by a resistive load are measured with a 300 V voltmeter of accuracy of full scale and a 5 A ammeter of accuracy of full scale. The readings obtained are 200 V and 2.5 A. The limiting error (in %) in computing the load resistance is (up to two decimal places) ____.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The limiting error in the computed load resistance is 2.50%. That is 1.5% from the voltmeter plus 1% from the ammeter.

Official answer: 2.49 to 2.53Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 IN (IIT Guwahati)

  1. A full-scale accuracy fixes the same absolute error at every point on the scale. For the voltmeter: .

  2. At the reading of , that is a relative error of .

  3. For the ammeter: .

  4. At the reading of , that is a relative error of .

  5. The resistance is a quotient: . A limiting error is the worst case, so the relative errors of a quotient add; they do not subtract: .

  6. So the limiting error in the computed load resistance is , which is on .

KEY IDEA

An instrument's accuracy stated as a percentage of full scale is a fixed absolute error, so convert it to a relative error at the actual reading. For a product or quotient, the limiting (worst-case) relative errors add.

WATCH OUT FOR

One mistake is to use the full-scale percentages directly () and forget that the error is a percentage of full scale, not of the reading. The other is to subtract the ammeter's relative error because is in the denominator. Worst-case errors of a quotient always add.
