Figure from the GATE 2026 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

An ideal sinusoidal voltage source v_i(t) (circle with a sine symbol) sits in the left vertical branch. Its top terminal connects to a top rail and its bottom terminal to a bottom rail. Three more vertical branches run between the same two rails, left to right: a 1 capacitor, a 2.2 mH inductor and a 1 k Ω resistor. There are no other elements, so the source, C, L and R are all in parallel across the same two nodes. Below the circuit it reads: v_i(t) = 12 sin (ω t).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The average power dissipated in the load at resonance is .

Official answer: 71.50 to 72.50Source: Official answer key, GATE 2026 EC (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Topology check. The ideal source, the capacitor, the inductor and the resistor all connect between the same two nodes, so all four are in parallel. The voltage across the resistor is therefore the source voltage, , at every frequency.

  2. Resonant frequency, for reference. , about . At the currents and are equal and opposite, so the parallel LC pair draws no net current. That changes the current the source supplies. It does not change the voltage across R, because an ideal voltage source fixes that voltage.

  3. Peak and rms. In the amplitude is a peak value: , so .

  4. Average power in the resistor.

  5. .

KEY IDEA

An element connected straight across an ideal voltage source always has the source voltage across it. Here R is in parallel with the source, so resonance changes only the current the source supplies, not the power in R: at any frequency.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the peak value as if it were rms, , which is twice the correct answer. A second trap is to assume resonance must change the answer and start computing currents through an equivalent impedance. The parallel LC only changes the source current, while the voltage across R stays fixed by the ideal source.
