GATE 2026 IN question 16: Two-port RLC network.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2026 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Two-port RLC network. The input terminals are on the left, marked V_in (+ at top, - at bottom). A resistor R runs in series along the top rail from the V_in + terminal to a junction node (marked with a dot). From that junction the top rail continues straight to the V_out + terminal on the right. A series branch of an inductor L (upper) and a capacitor C (lower) runs from the junction node down to the bottom rail. The bottom rail is a plain wire from the V_in - terminal to the V_out - terminal and joins the lower end of the capacitor at a node (marked with a dot). V_out (+ at top, - at bottom) is therefore taken across the series L-C branch, with the output terminals open (no load).

  1. (A)

    low pass filter

  2. (B)

    high pass filter

  3. (C)

    band pass filter

  4. (D)

    band stop filter

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The circuit is a band stop (notch) filter, option (D). The series L-C branch across the output shorts the output at , and it is an open circuit at both and , so the gain is 1 at both ends of the range and 0 at resonance.

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 IN (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Reading the circuit: is the series arm. is taken, with no load, across the shunt branch, which is in series with . The circuit is therefore a voltage divider with .

  2. Voltage divider. Multiplying the numerator and the denominator by : so

  3. Low-frequency limit, : behaves as an open circuit, so the shunt branch carries no current. No current flows through , it drops no voltage, and . The formula gives the same result: .

  4. High-frequency limit, : behaves as an open circuit, so again no current flows through and . From the formula, the terms dominate the numerator and the denominator, so .

  5. At series resonance, : , so the - branch is a short circuit across the output and .

  6. The gain is 1 at both ends of the frequency range and falls to 0 in a band around , which is a notch. The circuit is therefore a band stop filter, option (D).

KEY IDEA

To classify a filter, see what each element becomes at the frequency extremes and at resonance. At DC a capacitor is an open circuit, and at very high frequency an inductor is an open circuit. A series L-C branch has zero impedance at . When that branch is the shunt element and the output is taken across it, the input passes unchanged at both ends of the frequency range and is shorted out at . That is a band stop (notch) response.

WATCH OUT FOR

Answering band pass. That answer is right for two other circuits, not this one: the same circuit with the output taken across , or a circuit whose shunt element is a parallel L-C tank, which is an open circuit at resonance. A series L-C branch is the opposite of a tank: it is a short circuit at resonance, so across the output it removes the band around instead of passing it. A second slip is to check only one end of the range. Seeing that blocks DC and stopping there can lead to high pass or low pass, when the gain is actually 1 at both ends.
