Figure from the GATE 2022 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Left: a star-connected source with common node n (filled dot). Three sinusoidal sources come out of n. E_A points straight up, with its + terminal at the top, away from n. E_C runs to the lower left, with its + terminal at the outer (lower-left) end. E_B runs to the lower right, with its + terminal at the outer (right) end. Right: a star-connected load with common node n' (filled dot). Z_A is a box above n', Z_B a box to the lower left of n', and Z_C a box to the lower right of n'. Wiring: a top wire joins the + end of E_A to the top of Z_A. A middle horizontal wire joins the + end of E_B to the outer end of Z_B. A bottom wire joins the + end of E_C to the outer end of Z_C. There is no wire between n and n' (three-wire system, floating load neutral).

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

, option (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EE (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Phase voltages of the balanced supply. is the line voltage, so the phase voltage is . For sequence , taking as reference: , , (rms).

  2. Condition for zero neutral shift. By Millman's theorem, the voltage of the floating load neutral with respect to the source neutral is so exactly when the numerator is zero. With , each impedance sees its own source phase voltage, so each line current is . The numerator being zero is then just KCL at : .

  3. Phase A current: .

  4. Phase B current: .

  5. KCL at : .

  6. Solve for the impedance: This is a capacitive impedance.

  7. Checks. (i) The supply magnitude cancels out of , because all three have the same magnitude. Reading as a phase voltage would give the same . So would choosing a different reference angle. (ii) In admittance form, with the condition is . Here and , so . That gives , i.e. , which agrees. The answer is option (C).

KEY IDEA

In a three-wire star system, the load neutral sits at the source neutral potential exactly when the Millman numerator is zero. The same condition says the currents satisfy KCL at . The load does not have to be balanced for this: it is enough that the three phase currents, each set by its own phase voltage, add to zero.

WATCH OUT FOR

Assuming needs a balanced load and picking (option D). That cannot be right, since already differs from . Two other slips: using (the sequence) instead of , and dropping the minus sign in , which gives , not one of the options.
