GATE 2024 IN question 33: A single-loop-plus-branch circuit.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2024 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A single-loop-plus-branch circuit. On the left, a 12 V DC source, + terminal at the top. From the top of the source a wire runs right through a 4 Ω resistor and then a 0.25 H inductor (current i_L(t) marked with an arrow pointing right, left to right through the inductor) to a top node. From this top node two branches go down to the bottom rail, which returns to the source's − terminal: (1) a vertical 4 Ω resistor in series with a switch, the switch being at the lower end of this branch, labelled 't = 0' and 'Switch' (closed for t < 0, opened at t = 0); (2) at the far right, a 0.1 F capacitor with voltage v_c(t) marked + at its top terminal (the top node) and − at its bottom terminal (the bottom rail).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Official answer: 15Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 IN (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Steady state for (switch closed). In DC steady state the inductor acts as a short circuit and the capacitor as an open circuit. The source therefore drives one current through the series 4 Ω resistor, the inductor and the lower 4 Ω resistor:

  2. Capacitor voltage before switching. The capacitor is in parallel with the lower 4 Ω resistor, so . The slope does not need this value, but it fixes the state of the circuit.

  3. Continuity at the switching instant. Neither the inductor current nor the capacitor voltage can jump, so and .

  4. KCL at the top node at . With the switch open, the 4 Ω branch carries no current. All of the inductor current therefore flows into the capacitor: , entering the + terminal of .

  5. Capacitor law .

KEY IDEA

The inductor current cannot change instantly. Once the switch opens, the capacitor is the only path left for that current, so and .

WATCH OUT FOR

Some students treat the capacitor current as zero at because it was zero in steady state, and so answer 0. Only the capacitor voltage is continuous, not its current. Others keep the lower 4 Ω resistor in the circuit after the switch opens, splitting the current and getting a smaller slope. A third error is to take by forgetting the second resistor, which gives 30.
