Figure description

Three nodes: a top rail T, a bottom-left node M (drawn as a dot below switch K), and a bottom-right node R (a dot below the capacitor). Between T and M, from left to right, are three parallel branches: a 10 Ω resistor; an independent current source i(t) = sin 1000t with its arrow pointing up, so it drives current from M into T; and switch K, drawn open, connecting T to M. The 100 capacitor connects T to R on the right. Switch K, drawn closed, connects M to R directly along the bottom wire. Below that wire a second branch also runs from M to R: from M down, then a 10 Ω resistor, then a 5 V battery. The battery's positive terminal (long plate, marked +) faces the resistor and hence M, and its negative terminal faces R. Before t_1: K open, K closed. At t = t_1: K closes and K opens.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The minimum switching instant is .

Official answer: 1.56 to 1.58Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EE (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Circuit before . With closed, M and R are the same node, so the capacitor is in parallel with the left resistor and the current source. The battery branch is shorted by : a current of circulates through the battery, the lower resistor and , and it has no effect on the capacitor. Take .

  2. Sinusoidal steady state for . With : and , so and

  3. The source pushes current up into T, and it returns to M through the RC pair. With the peak phasor , (peak). So for :

  4. Circuit after . Closing shorts T to M, so the current source and the left resistor no longer affect the capacitor (the source current just flows through ). With open, the loop is: capacitor (T to R), then the battery and the lower resistor (R back to M, which is now T). This is a first-order RC circuit with .

  5. Final value. In DC steady state no current flows, so there is no drop across the lower resistor, and , because the battery's + terminal faces M and its terminal faces R.

  6. Complete response. For : The capacitor voltage cannot jump, so . The transient term disappears only if .

  7. Set , which gives . The solutions are or , plus any multiple of . In other words, or , plus any multiple of .

  8. Since , the smallest root is . The other roots are either negative or larger than this. So

KEY IDEA

If the post-switching forced response is DC, the capacitor shows no transient only when you switch at the moment its pre-switching voltage already equals the new final value. Here that means the AC steady-state voltage has to equal . The time constant plays no part.

WATCH OUT FOR

One slip is to include the battery in the pre-switching circuit, but shorts that branch. Another is to forget the phase of the parallel RC impedance and solve , which gives . A third is to misread the battery's polarity. Taking leads to .
