Figure from the GATE 2024 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A T-type two-port network. Port 1 on the left: terminal 1 (top, marked +) and terminal 1' (bottom, marked -), port voltage V_1. Port 2 on the right: terminal 2 (top, marked +) and terminal 2' (bottom, marked -), port voltage V_2. Current I_1 enters terminal 1 (arrow pointing right, into the network); current I_2 enters terminal 2 (arrow pointing left, into the network). From terminal 1 a series 2 Ω resistor runs to a middle node N; terminal 2 is connected directly to node N by a wire (no series element on the port-2 side). From node N a 4 Ω resistor goes vertically down to a diamond-shaped dependent voltage source of value 8V_1 (voltage-controlled by the port-1 voltage V_1), whose '-' terminal is at the top (connected to the 4 Ω resistor) and '+' terminal at the bottom. The bottom of the source connects to the common bottom wire joining 1' and 2'.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Official answer: 1.5Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EC (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Definition: , so short-circuit port 2. Take the bottom wire (1'–2') as the reference node.

  2. Terminal 2 is wired directly to the middle node N, so shorting port 2 forces . The dependent source does not vanish, because it is controlled by , which is not zero.

  3. Ohm's law in the 2 Ω branch (current flowing from terminal 1 towards N): .

  4. Dependent source polarity: its '+' terminal is at the bottom (the reference, 0 V) and its '-' terminal is at the top, so the node between the 4 Ω resistor and the source sits at .

  5. Ohm's law in the 4 Ω branch, taking current flowing down from N: .

  6. KCL at node N (both port currents enter N, leaves it): , so .

  7. Therefore

KEY IDEA

For , short port 2 (). Here terminal 2 is wired straight to the middle node, so that node is at 0 V. The two branch currents then follow from Ohm's law. The source stays active because . KCL at the middle node, with both port currents taken as entering, gives .

WATCH OUT FOR

Misreading the polarity of the dependent source. Its '-' terminal is at the top, so the node above it is at . Taking '+' at the top puts that node at , which gives and the wrong answer . The other common slips are taking as leaving terminal 2, which gives , and switching off the -controlled source when port 2 is shorted, which gives .
