Figure from the GATE 2024 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Two boxes connected in cascade. Left box labelled 'Two-port network P', right box labelled 'Two-port network Q'. Two input terminals (open circles, top and bottom) on the far left connect to the input port of P. The two output-side wires of P run to a pair of intermediate open-circle terminals (top and bottom) and then into the input port of Q. The output port of Q connects to two open-circle terminals on the far right. A dashed rectangle encloses both P and Q (but not the outer terminals), labelled below as 'Two-port network R'. So R is the cascade (tandem) connection P followed by Q.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

.

Official answer: -19.90 to -19.70Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Cascade rule. R is P followed by Q in tandem, so . Use the convention . With it, the output pair of P is exactly the input pair of Q, so the ABCD matrices multiply in the order the signal passes through them.

  2. Z to ABCD for P. From we get . Substituting into gives . So , where .

  3. Check: , as it should be for a non-reciprocal network.

  4. Y to ABCD for Q. From we get . Substituting into gives . So , where .

  5. Check: , as it should be because (Q is reciprocal).

  6. Only the (1,2) entry is needed. Row 1 of times column 2 of : .

KEY IDEA

For networks in cascade, convert each one to its ABCD (transmission) matrix and multiply them in the order the signal passes through: . Then compute only the entry you need, here . You get the Z→ABCD and Y→ABCD formulas by solving the port-2 equation for the port-1 variable. Checking ( for P and for reciprocal Q) is a quick test of each conversion.

WATCH OUT FOR

(1) Multiplying in the wrong order: gives . (2) Swapping and for the non-reciprocal P, i.e. dividing by 60 instead of 80, which gives about . (3) Dropping the minus signs in the Y→ABCD formulas. Because is negative here, the signs of every entry of then come out wrong.
