If there are three unrooted trees for four protein sequences, the number of rooted trees for the same number of sequences is ____________.

See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The number of rooted trees for four sequences is 15.

Official answer: 15Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 BT (IIT Kanpur)

  1. An unrooted bifurcating (binary) tree for taxa has branches (edges). For leaves: internal nodes , total nodes , so total edges nodes .

  2. The number of distinct unrooted binary trees for taxa is , matching the value given in the question stem (this is a consistency check on the standard formula, not something to be computed from scratch).

  3. A root can be inserted at any point along any one of the branches of a given unrooted tree, and each distinct branch placement produces a distinct rooted tree. Hence (number of rooted trees) (number of unrooted trees) .

  4. Substituting: rooted trees .

  5. Cross-check using the direct closed-form for rooted binary trees, : for , , consistent with the step-by-step result.

KEY IDEA

An unrooted bifurcating tree for taxa has branches, and placing a root on any one of these branches produces a distinct rooted tree. So rooted trees = (number of unrooted trees) .

WATCH OUT FOR

Confusing the two standard counting formulas — using (rooted count) as if it directly gave the unrooted count, or forgetting that the multiplier linking unrooted to rooted trees is the number of branches (), not the number of taxa () or internal nodes.
