GATE 2018 EC Q.55: solution and answer
Answer and solution
ANSWER
Official answer: 2.90 to 3.10Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EC (IIT Guwahati)
We need the sum of the even-indexed samples: .
Pick out the even samples with the selector , which equals 1 for even and 0 for odd :
Put in the DFT definition: . So the first sum is .
Put : , so . So the second sum is .
Therefore
Check with the IDFT. Since , we get , and so The inner sum is a geometric series with ratio , whose fourth power is 1. It equals 4 when or (ratio ) and 0 for every other . So .
KEY IDEA
For an -point DFT with even, and . Adding them cancels the odd-indexed samples and doubles the even-indexed ones, so the sum of the even samples is . You never need to compute itself.
WATCH OUT FOR
Using in place of , which gives and and so the wrong answer 2. Another is forgetting to divide by 2, or confusing this with the IDFT factor and writing . A third is trying to recover all eight samples through a full IDFT, which takes time and invites arithmetic slips.
