Which one of the following statements is TRUE?

  1. (A)

    All are non-zero.

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

    Only and are non-zero.

  4. (D)

    Only and are non-zero.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Only and are non-zero (each equals 4), so option (C) is TRUE.

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2020 EC (IIT Delhi)

  1. Sample the signal. With : , so for the samples are .

  2. Write it at a DFT bin frequency. The DFT kernel is . Since , : exactly 2 whole cycles fit in the 8 samples, so the tone sits exactly on bin and nothing leaks into other bins. (Equivalently: , bin spacing , and falls exactly on bin 2.)

  3. Euler's form. , since , i.e. .

  4. Orthogonality of DFT exponentials. if , and otherwise.

  5. Result. Substituting, , so and every other .

  6. Direct check on the bins that decide the options. Only even contribute, with , . (rules out A). (rules out B). and (rules out D, which says only and are non-zero). Only and are non-zero, which is option (C).

KEY IDEA

Sampling at gives , which completes exactly 2 cycles in the 8-point window. A cosine sitting exactly on a DFT bin puts all its energy into bins and , each with value . Here that means and every other bin is zero, with no leakage.

WATCH OUT FOR

Picking bin 4 by treating as "half of " and so half of , instead of writing , which gives . The other common mistake is forgetting the negative-frequency half: the term lands at , not at . Expecting leakage into every bin (option A) is also wrong here, because an integer number of cycles fits in the window.
