Answer and solution

ANSWER

(A) , where is an eigenvalue. An input is an eigenfunction when the system returns it multiplied only by a constant.

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EE (IIT Guwahati)

  1. What an eigenfunction is. For a system operator , an input is an eigenfunction if the output is the same signal multiplied by a constant: The constant may be complex but must not depend on . It is called the eigenvalue.

  2. Check with the standard LTI eigenfunction. Take . The convolution integral gives The output is with , a constant. This is the form in (A).

  3. Option (B): multiplies the input by , which changes with time (for ). The output is therefore not a constant times , so (B) fails the definition.

  4. Option (C): is the input modulated, i.e. shifted in frequency. The multiplying factor again depends on , so (C) fails too.

  5. Option (D): does not contain at all. It is not a scaled copy of the input, so it cannot be the output for an eigenfunction input.

  6. (A) is the only option where the output equals the input times a constant. Answer: (A).

KEY IDEA

An eigenfunction passes through the system unchanged in shape: , where is a constant (possibly complex) that does not depend on . For an LTI system, is an eigenfunction and its eigenvalue is .

WATCH OUT FOR

Picking (D) because the frequency response is involved. For the input , is itself the eigenvalue, and the output is , not . The output always has to contain the input signal. Picking (B) or (C) is the other mistake: both multiply the input by a factor that changes with time, which is modulation, not scaling.
