Consider the discrete-time signal ,
where .
The smallest for which is ________.
ANSWER
The smallest for which is . At that point holds for , for and for .
Official answer: -3Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 IN (IIT Kanpur)
Time-reversed, shifted step. when , that is for , and for (i.e. ).
Shifted step. when , that is for , and for (i.e. ).
Region : and , so .
Region : both steps equal 1, so .
Region : and , so .
Putting the three regions together,
is non-zero for every and first becomes zero at , so the smallest with is .
KEY IDEA
Find the switching point of each step. is 1 for (a reflected step, so it is on to the left), and is 1 for (on to the right). These two breakpoints cut the time axis into three regions. The difference is zero only where the two steps overlap, , and the left end of that overlap is the answer.
WATCH OUT FOR
Getting the direction of the reflected step wrong. Some students read as 1 for or , when it is actually 1 for . Two other slips: answering , the last point where , instead of , the first point where ; and assuming that again for , when it is there.
