Figure from the GATE 2022 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Inverting op-amp circuit. A sinusoidal source V_in has its lower terminal grounded and its upper terminal connected through a 10 kΩ resistor to the inverting (−) input of the op-amp. The non-inverting (+) input is grounded. The feedback network between the output and the inverting input is a 100 kΩ resistor in parallel with a 1 nF capacitor. The output node is labelled V_out. Supply rails are drawn as short stubs on the op-amp but have no values.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The voltage gain falls to 0 dB (magnitude 1) at .

Official answer: 15.80 to 16.00Source: Official answer key, GATE 2022 IN (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Assume an ideal op-amp (infinite open-loop gain, infinite input impedance). The + input is grounded, so by the virtual short the − input sits at 0 V and no current enters the op-amp. The circuit is an inverting amplifier with input impedance and feedback impedance , where and .

  2. Feedback impedance: so the inverting-amplifier gain is This is a first-order low-pass (lossy integrator) with DC gain magnitude , i.e. .

  3. Time constant: .

  4. Magnitude of the gain:

  5. 0 dB means :

  6. , so

  7. Rounded to two decimal places in kilohertz: .

KEY IDEA

With in the feedback path, the inverting amplifier becomes a first-order low-pass with gain . Its DC gain is (20 dB). The 0 dB frequency is where equals the DC gain, so .

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the ideal-integrator shortcut , which drops the 1 under the square root. That gives and . It happens to sit inside the key range, but the reasoning is wrong. A second mistake is to give the 3 dB corner, , or to forget to divide by and answer in rad/s.
