The output of a first-order process is governed by the following differential equation

where is a non-zero time constant, is the gain and is the input with .

Assume . The transfer function for this process is (consider as the independent variable in the Laplace domain)

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(A)

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 BT (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Symbols: is the process time constant (units of time), is the steady-state gain, and .

  2. Laplace transform of a derivative: . Because , this is just . Since and , both variables already start from zero, so they are already deviation variables.

  3. Transform both sides of the model: .

  4. Factor out : .

  5. The transfer function is output over input with zero initial conditions:

  6. Check against the options. The steady-state gain must be (by the final-value theorem, a unit step in settles at ), and the pole must be at . B gives and C gives , so both are wrong. D, , gives and a pole at . Only A meets both conditions, so the answer is (A).

KEY IDEA

With zero initial conditions, take the Laplace transform term by term () and form . A first-order process always has the standard form : the gain is and the single pole is at .

WATCH OUT FOR

Picking D, , by dividing the whole equation by and then factoring wrongly. That form changes the steady-state gain to and moves the pole to . It is also dimensionally inconsistent, because has units of and cannot be added to a pure number unless it is multiplied by .
