- (D)
Let be a function. Note: denotes the set of real numbers.
Which ONE of the following choices gives the values of that make the function continuous and differentiable?
ANSWER
Option (A): .
Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 DA (IISc Bengaluru)
The outer pieces are for and for . Both are differentiable, so only the joins at need checking. The middle piece is , with .
Continuity at : the left limit is , so .
Continuity at : the right limit is , so .
Subtracting the first equation from the second gives , so . Then .
Differentiability at : the left derivative is and the right derivative is . Setting them equal gives . With this gives .
Differentiability at : the right derivative is and the left derivative is . Setting them equal gives . With this again gives , so the two conditions agree.
From with : .
Hence , which is option (A). Check: gives , matching the outer pieces. Its slope is at and at , matching the slopes of and .
Options (B), (C) and (D) fail. (B) has , which violates . (C) gives , so . (D) gives .
KEY IDEA
Differentiable implies continuous. At each junction, match both the function value and the derivative of the middle quadratic with those of the outer line. This gives four linear equations in (two of them consistent).
WATCH OUT FOR
Imposing only continuity. Continuity alone gives and , which leaves a whole family of solutions, and options (B) and (C) are tempting for that reason. The derivative conditions fix .
