ANSWER
The function necessarily has a local minimum at , option (A).
Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 DA (IISc Bengaluru)
Since , the point is a stationary (critical) point of .
Because , the quotient is positive for close to . So just to the left of and just to the right. Hence decreases and then increases, and is a strict local minimum (the second-derivative test).
It cannot be a local maximum, since would have to stop increasing after , but immediately to the right.
The conclusion is local only, because gives no information about far from . To show that a global minimum is not guaranteed, take and . Then , so , and , so . Yet while (indeed as ). So is a local minimum but not a global one. This also rules out a global maximum, since a global maximum would be a local maximum, which was excluded in step 3.
So necessarily has a local minimum at , which is option A.
KEY IDEA
At a stationary point, (second-derivative test) guarantees a local minimum only. It says nothing about global behaviour.
WATCH OUT FOR
Choosing "global minimum" because the second derivative is positive. is a local condition. Global minimality needs convexity everywhere, i.e. on all of .
