Figure from the GATE 2025 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Unity negative feedback loop. 'Input' enters a summing junction with a + sign; the junction output feeds block D(s), which feeds block G(s) in cascade, whose output is 'Output'. A take-off point at the output returns directly (unity gain, no block) to the summing junction with a − sign.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Official answer: 0.1Source: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EE (IIT Roorkee)

  1. With unity negative feedback, the open-loop transfer function is

  2. Plant magnitude at : and , so

  3. Plant phase at : the integrator gives and each of the two poles at gives , so

  4. Phase-margin condition at the gain crossover: , so . Since the plant already gives , the controller has to add at .

  5. Phase of the PD controller: , so and .

  6. Check that really is the gain crossover: , so . The magnitude and phase conditions both hold at the same frequency, so is consistent.

KEY IDEA

At the plant has a phase of exactly and a magnitude of . A phase margin therefore needs the PD zero to add exactly there, so . With that value, cancels the plant's , so really is the gain crossover. The question is self-consistent, and the magnitude check confirms the answer.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using only one pole's phase ( in place of for the squared factor ), which puts the plant phase at and leads to the wrong conclusion that no controller phase is needed. Another mistake is computing as instead of , which spoils the magnitude check.
