Closed-loop transfer function (unity feedback):
Compare with the standard second-order form : gives , and gives , so .
Resonant peak of a second-order system (a peak exists only for ):
Solve the quadratic in : which gives or .
Reject : then , the closed-loop magnitude falls steadily from 1 and there is no resonant peak, so the formula does not apply. Keep , so .
Gain:
Check: the resonant frequency is , which is real, so the peak exists. Evaluating at that frequency gives exactly 2.
KEY IDEA
For with unity feedback, the closed loop is a standard second-order system with and . Setting gives a quadratic in . Take only the root with , because a resonant peak exists only in that range. Then convert back to .
WATCH OUT FOR
Taking the larger root , which gives . That value of is above 0.707, where the closed-loop response has no resonant peak, so it cannot have . A second slip is to apply to the open-loop instead of the closed-loop . A third is to write instead of when comparing with .
