GATE 2018 IN Q.14: solution and answer
Answer and solution
ANSWER
The phase margin is . The gain crossover is at , where and .
Official answer: 180, or -180Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 IN (IIT Guwahati)
Frequency response: , so
Gain crossover condition :
The only real, non-negative root is (the other factor gives , which has no real solution). Check: the DC gain is , i.e. , and since increases for every , falls strictly below after that. The magnitude curve therefore touches only at .
Phase at gain crossover: . (On the Nyquist plot, the curve starts at the point , which is exactly away from the critical point on the unit circle.)
Phase margin definition:
KEY IDEA
Phase margin is measured where . Here the DC gain is exactly and the magnitude only falls from there, so the gain crossover sits at , where the phase is . That gives .
WATCH OUT FOR
Seeing that never goes above and deciding there is no gain crossover, then answering "infinite" or "undefined". The magnitude equals at , and that point is the gain crossover. Another mistake is to mix up phase margin with gain margin. The phase only reaches as , so there is no finite phase crossover and the gain margin is infinite, but that is a separate quantity from the phase margin. A third slip is dropping the constant term when expanding , which gives a spurious non-zero crossover frequency.
