GATE 2024 IN question 18: Polar plot on Re–Im axes (horizontal axis labelled Re, vertical axis labelled Im, both drawn with arrows at both ends).Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2024 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Polar plot on Re–Im axes (horizontal axis labelled Re, vertical axis labelled Im, both drawn with arrows at both ends). The point 1 is marked on the positive real axis, labelled with an arrow as ω = 0. From this point a straight vertical line is drawn downward (parallel to the negative imaginary axis, at constant real part 1), ending in an arrowhead labelled ω → ∞. So the locus starts at 1 + j0 and runs straight down along Re = 1 towards -j ∞.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(A) . Its real part is always and its imaginary part goes from to , so the polar plot is the vertical line running down from .

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 IN (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Read the plot. The real part stays at for every . The imaginary part starts at when and falls without limit as . So we need for all and decreasing from towards .

  2. Option (A), : and . With it starts at for and moves straight down to as . This matches the plot exactly.

  3. Option (C), : it lies on the same line , but goes to , so the locus would run upward. Rejected.

  4. Option (B), all-pass: for every , and goes from to . That traces the lower half of the unit circle from to , not a vertical line. Rejected.

  5. Option (D), first-order lag: and . That traces a lower semicircle of diameter from to the origin, not a line going to infinity. Rejected.

  6. So the plot is , which is : a single zero at in the right half-plane (non-minimum phase). Its magnitude grows without limit while its phase goes to , which is why the locus heads straight down. The answer is (A).

KEY IDEA

Split into real and imaginary parts and match them to the plot. A vertical line at means the real part does not depend on , so must be plus a purely imaginary term. The direction the line runs (down to ) fixes the sign of that term as . Neither rational option can do this: they stay bounded, tracing the unit circle (all-pass) or a semicircle into the origin (lag).

WATCH OUT FOR

Picking (C), , because it gives the same vertical line. It runs upward to , while the plot runs down. The other trap is choosing the all-pass (B) because it also has a right-half-plane zero and starts at . Its magnitude stays at , so it traces a semicircle ending at and never heads off to infinity.
