The open loop transfer function of a unity negative feedback system is
where , and are positive constants. The phase cross-over frequency, in rad/s, is
ANSWER
The phase crossover frequency is rad/s, which is option (A).
Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EC (IIT Kanpur)
Phase crossover definition: the phase crossover frequency is the frequency at which . The gain adds no phase, so it drops out and the answer cannot depend on .
Phase of each factor: the pole at the origin contributes , and each first-order pole with contributes :
As rises from to , this phase falls steadily from to , so it passes through exactly once.
Set the phase to :
Solve the arctangent equation: write and . Then , so , which means . (Equivalently, the denominator of goes to zero.)
Solve for :
Cross-check with real and imaginary parts: the denominator of is
At the imaginary part is zero and the real part is negative. So is a negative real number there, which is a phase of . This matches option (A).
KEY IDEA
Phase crossover is where , and the gain has no effect on it. The integrator already gives , so the two lag angles must add up to . That happens when . So is the geometric mean of the two corner frequencies and .
WATCH OUT FOR
Picking (B), , by solving instead of , or by multiplying the corner frequencies instead of taking their geometric mean. Another mistake is to forget the from the pole at the origin and require the two lags to reach , which they never do. Students also mix up phase crossover (phase ) with gain crossover (, which does depend on ).
