Figure description

Block diagram. R(s) enters summing junction 1 with sign +. The output of summing junction 1 (call it E(s)) goes right. A take-off point on that line sends E(s) into two blocks, each (1)/((s+4)): the top block sits on the main forward line, and the bottom block is fed by a branch that drops down from the take-off point. The output of the top block is C(s) (the system output, arrow to the right). A take-off point on the C(s) line goes down into summing junction 2 with sign +. The output of the bottom block enters summing junction 2 from the left with sign -. The output of summing junction 2 runs down, left along the bottom, and up into summing junction 1 with sign - (negative feedback).

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

. The answer is option (B).

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 EC (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Call the signal leaving the first summing junction . The top block and the bottom block both take as input, so the top block gives and the bottom block also gives .

  2. Summing junction 2 takes and subtracts the bottom-block output, so the feedback signal is

  3. Summing junction 1 gives . The feedback path carries no signal because the two identical branches cancel exactly.

  4. Check with the general reduction. Take as the top block and as the bottom block. Since , the feedback is , so and With the denominator is .

  5. Therefore which is option (B).

KEY IDEA

Work out what signal actually reaches each summing junction before you reach for a reduction formula. Summing junction 2 subtracts two copies of the same signal, , so the feedback is exactly zero. The loop is effectively open and is just the forward block .

WATCH OUT FOR

Treating the two blocks as a parallel pair whose outputs add, which gives (option C). Only the top block feeds . The other common error is using the standard with and ignoring the input at summing junction 2. That misses the cancellation, and the resulting denominator is not in the options.
