Figure from the GATE 2023 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Input R(s) enters from the left on a horizontal line that branches to two blocks. Left branch: R(s) goes down into a block of gain 2, whose output enters summing junction 1 at the top with sign +. Right branch: R(s) goes down into a block of gain 3, whose output enters summing junction 2 at the top with sign +. The output of summing junction 1 goes right into a block 1/s; the output of 1/s enters summing junction 2 from the left with sign +. The output of summing junction 2 is Y(s). Y(s) is picked off and fed back leftward through a block of gain 1, entering summing junction 1 from below with sign + (positive feedback).

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

, option (B).

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EE (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Call the output of the first summing junction . Both of its inputs carry a sign, so . The feedback adds to the input, so this is a positive-feedback loop.

  2. The second summing junction adds the integrator output and the feedforward term: .

  3. Substitute for : .

  4. Collect the terms on one side: .

  5. Multiply both sides by , which gives , so

  6. Check with Mason's gain formula. There is one loop, , so . The forward paths are (through the integrator) and (direct). Both paths pass through the second summing junction, which lies on the loop, so both touch it and . Then .

  7. Checking the options: as the integrator path dies out and only the direct gain is left, so . That rules out (A) and (C). The positive feedback around the integrator puts the closed-loop pole at , and of (B) and (D) only (B) has that pole. The answer is (B).

KEY IDEA

Name the output of each summing junction and write one equation per junction using the signs printed on the diagram, then solve for . In Mason's formula, both forward paths end at the summing junction that sits on the only loop, so . Because the feedback is positive, , which puts the pole at .

WATCH OUT FOR

Reaching for the negative-feedback formula out of habit, even though both signs at the first junction are . That gives , which is the trap option (D). Swapping which gain goes to the integrator path as well gives , option (A). Another slip is treating the direct path of gain as not touching the loop and using . That gives , which is not one of the options.
