Figure description

s-plane pole-zero map: horizontal real axis labelled sigma (arrowheads both ends), vertical imaginary axis labelled j-omega, 's-plane' written at top right. Three open-loop poles marked with x, all on the real axis: at s = -4, at s = -1, and at the origin s = 0. No zeros are shown.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

. The root locus of crosses the imaginary axis at , where .

Official answer: 2Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 IN (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Read the map: poles at , and , no zeros. With unity negative feedback, .

  2. Characteristic equation: .

  3. Routh array: ; ; ; .

  4. The locus crosses the -axis when the row becomes zero: .

  5. Auxiliary equation from the row: .

  6. Check by substituting : Imaginary part: (taking ). Real part: , so the point lies on the positive- root locus.

  7. Angle check at : the pole angles are (from ), (from ) and (from ). They sum to , so and the angle condition holds.

  8. Hence , giving .

KEY IDEA

A point on the -axis lies on the root locus exactly where the closed loop is marginally stable. Make the row of the Routh array zero to get the critical gain, then solve the auxiliary equation from the row to get the crossing frequency. As a quick cross-check, the pole angles at () add up to exactly .

WATCH OUT FOR

Stopping at the critical gain and entering when the question asks for the crossing frequency . Another slip is expanding as (the coefficient is ), which moves the crossing to . Some students also treat the trivial root as the answer, but it corresponds to and is ruled out by .
