Figure from the GATE 2024 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Unity negative feedback loop. R(s) enters a summing junction with a + sign; the output of the junction goes into a block G(s); the block output is C(s). C(s) is taken off and fed back directly (unity gain, no block) to the summing junction with a − sign.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The root-locus branch leaves the pole at an angle of about . Rounded, the answer is .

Official answer: 4 to 8Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Open-loop poles: . Open-loop zeros: . Both zeros are in the right half-plane. The loop has unity negative feedback and , so the angle condition applies: (mod ).

  2. Apply the angle condition at a point just off to get the angle of departure:

  3. Angle from : lies in the second quadrant, so its angle is .

  4. Angle from : lies in the second quadrant, so its angle is .

  5. Angle from the other pole : , which is .

  6. Bring it into : .

  7. Independent check: the characteristic equation is . Near , the branch leaves in the direction of evaluated at . There , so and . This gives , whose angle is . That agrees with the result above.

KEY IDEA

For a complex pole with negative feedback and , the departure angle is . Measure each vector from the zero or other pole to the pole in question, and use its true quadrant. Then reduce the result into .

WATCH OUT FOR

The usual slip is to take a zero's angle as a plain value (for example instead of ), which ignores that the vectors and lie in the second quadrant. Another is to point the vectors from the pole to the zeros instead of from the zeros to the pole. A third is to stop at without subtracting , even though the question asks for a value between and . Some students also put a minus sign on the zero terms, which gives a very different answer.
