Characteristic equation. For negative feedback, : Since , this becomes
Routh array:
Stability conditions (no sign change in the first column): the row needs , and the row needs . So the system is stable for .
Marginal stability: at the row becomes entirely zero, which signals a pair of roots on the -axis.
Auxiliary equation from the row: .
Check: at the characteristic polynomial is . The roots are and . The imaginary pair is simple (not repeated) and the third root is in the left half-plane, so the system oscillates steadily: it is marginally stable.
Therefore .
KEY IDEA
Build the Routh array of . Marginal stability happens at the value of that turns the row entirely to zero, provided the other first-column entries stay positive. The auxiliary equation from the row then gives the -axis roots and the oscillation frequency.
WATCH OUT FOR
Forgetting the zero term when forming the characteristic equation. This drops the term or the constant and gives a wrong entry. Another mistake is using the third-order shortcut with the coefficients in the wrong order: the correct form is , which gives . Some students also answer . That makes the row zero, which only puts a root at the origin (the open-loop pole at ), so it does not give the sustained oscillation the question asks about.
