TOPICS
Seven topics, in the order they are taught
Taken from the official GATE 2027 syllabus. Each topic has notes, the formulas you need, its previous-year questions with the official answers and step-by-step solutions, and practice questions.
The entity-relationship (ER) model
The entity-relationship (ER) model describes data as entities, their attributes and the relationships between them, together with cardinality and participation constraints.
1 previous-year question · 2 marks · 6 practice questions
The relational model: relational algebra and tuple calculus
The relational model stores data as relations (sets of tuples) identified by keys.
5 previous-year questions · 8 marks · 6 practice questions
SQL
SQL for GATE DA is mostly about predicting the exact result of a query on small tables.
4 previous-year questions · 6 marks · 7 practice questions
Integrity constraints, functional dependencies and normal forms
Integrity constraints keep a relation's data valid, and functional dependencies (FDs) are the rules that drive schema design: you use them to find keys, test normal forms and decompose a schema without losing information or constraints.
6 previous-year questions · 9 marks · 6 practice questions
File organisation and indexing
File organisation decides how records are laid out in disk blocks, and an index is an extra, smaller file that shortens the search for a record.
3 previous-year questions · 5 marks · 6 practice questions
Data types and data transformation: normalisation, discretisation, sampling and compression
This topic covers how attribute values are classified (nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio; discrete or continuous) and how raw data is prepared for analysis: rescaling (normalisation), grouping into bins (discretisation), drawing a subset (sampling) and shrinking (compression and reduction).
1 previous-year question · 1 marks · 7 practice questions
Data warehouse modelling: multidimensional schemas, concept hierarchies and measures
A data warehouse stores integrated, historical data organised around business dimensions, so that aggregate questions can be answered quickly.
3 previous-year questions · 5 marks · 6 practice questions
QUESTIONS BY TOPIC AND YEAR
23 questions, by topic and year
How many questions each topic had in the DA papers of each year. This shows what was asked, not what will be asked. We placed each question under a topic ourselves; the exam paper does not label topics. Every question links back to its paper.
| Topic | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ER model | · | · | 1 | 1 |
| Relational algebra | 1 | 2 | 2 | 5 |
| SQL | 1 | 1 | 2 | 4 |
| Normal forms | 1 | 3 | 2 | 6 |
| Indexing | 1 | · | 2 | 3 |
| Data transformation | 1 | · | · | 1 |
| Data warehousing | · | 1 | 2 | 3 |
All three GATE DA papers are included: 2024 (IISc Bengaluru), 2025 (IIT Roorkee) and 2026 (IIT Guwahati), each with its final answer key.

THE OFFICIAL SYLLABUS
What each paper lists under Database Management and Warehousing
From the GATE 2027 syllabus PDF: all of DA Section 5, “Database Management and Warehousing”. Its “normal form” is database normalisation; “data transformation such as normalization” is the data-preparation sense: rescaling values.
GATE DA
ER-model, relational model: relational algebra, tuple calculus, SQL, integrity constraints, normal form, file organization, indexing, data types, data transformation such as normalization, discretization, sampling, compression; data warehouse modelling: schema for multidimensional data models, concept hierarchies, measures: categorization and computations.
