Figure from the GATE 2026 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A 4:1 MUX block labelled '4:1 MUX' with data inputs I0, I1, I2, I3 on the left, select lines S1 and S0 at the bottom, and output f(x,y,z) on the right, ending in a terminal dot. Constant 1 (terminal dot) is wired to I0. A vertical wire leaves the 1 line at a plain T-junction (no junction dot is drawn; a T-junction is a connection), runs down, and turns right into I2, so I2 = 1. Constant 0 (terminal dot) is wired to I1. Where the 0 line crosses the vertical wire it has a hop (a small arc), so those two wires are NOT connected. Input y is wired to I3. Input x drives S1 and input z drives S0. Summary: I0 = 1, I1 = 0, I2 = 1, I3 = y, S1 = x, S0 = z.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

, option (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 EC (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Read the data inputs off the figure. A vertical wire leaves the 1 line at a T-junction and runs down to , so it carries 1. The 0 line hops over that wire (the arc means no connection) and goes to . So , , , , and the select lines are , . Complement is written with throughout.

  2. Output equation of a 4:1 MUX:

  3. Substitute , and the inputs:

  4. Combine the first two terms: . This leaves .

  5. Apply the absorption rule with (so ) and :

  6. Check with the truth table. When the MUX selects or , so (minterms 0, 2, 4, 6). When it selects (for ) or (for ), so the only 1 is at (minterm 7). So , which is option (C). The other options fail: (A) and (B) give at , and (D) gives at and at .

KEY IDEA

A 4:1 MUX outputs the data input chosen by its select lines, . Put in , and the inputs read from the figure (, , , ), then simplify. The two constant-1 inputs together cover every case with .

WATCH OUT FOR

Most errors come from misreading the figure. If you treat the hop on the 0 line as a connection, you tie 0 to the vertical wire and get (and a 1-to-0 short). Mistaking which variable drives which select line is the other trap: drives and drives , so is not a select input at all. Some students also take the select order as just because is the MSB. That pairs the terms wrongly and leads to options such as (D).
