ANSWER
The developed reluctance torque of a salient-pole synchronous motor attains its maximum value at a load angle of 45° electrical.
Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EE (IIT Guwahati)
Power developed by a salient-pole synchronous motor has two components: an excitation (magnet) component and a reluctance component:
The second term — the reluctance power (and hence reluctance torque) — exists only because of rotor saliency () and is proportional to , independent of the excitation emf .
The magnitude of is maximum (equal to 1) when , i.e. when .
Therefore the developed reluctance torque attains its maximum value at a load angle of electrical, independent of the excitation torque component (which instead peaks at ).
This corresponds to option (B).
KEY IDEA
In a salient-pole synchronous machine, , so besides the excitation (fundamental) power/torque term proportional to , there is a reluctance power/torque term proportional to arising purely from the rotor saliency (). This reluctance term is maximum when , i.e. at electrical — independent of excitation.
WATCH OUT FOR
Confusing the reluctance-torque maximum (at ) with the excitation-torque maximum (at ), or assuming the total developed torque and the reluctance-torque component peak at the same angle.
