In an electrostatic field, the electric displacement density vector, , is given by

where , , are the unit vectors along -axis, -axis, and -axis, respectively. Consider a cubical region centered at the origin with each side of length 1 m, and vertices at . The electric charge enclosed within is ________ C (rounded off to two decimal places).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The charge enclosed within the cube is 0.50 C.

Official answer: 0.48 to 0.52Source: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EC (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Gauss's law, point form: , the volume charge density in . So the enclosed charge is , which by the divergence theorem equals the net outward flux .

  2. Divergence: The -component does not depend on , so it contributes nothing.

  3. Volume integral over the cube : and the same value holds for .

  4. Collect the terms: each side has length , so the two remaining integrations each contribute a factor of :

  5. Check by surface flux: on the faces , and the outward normal is , so on both. Each face has area , so the pair gives . The faces give another in the same way. On the faces , is the same on both faces but the outward normals point in opposite directions, so those two fluxes cancel. Total , which agrees with the volume integral.

KEY IDEA

Enclosed charge is the volume integral of (Gauss's law in point form plus the divergence theorem). Here . Over a cube centred at the origin, , so each term gives and .

WATCH OUT FOR

Integrating from 0 to 1 instead of from to . That gives and , because the cube is centred at the origin, not placed at a corner. Other slips: differentiating with respect to or instead of , which adds a spurious term, or using and forgetting to divide by 3.
