Figure from the GATE 2022 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Two concentric circles, both centred at the origin. The inner circle has an arrow from the centre to its rim labelled r = c, and the text above it reads "V (r) at r = c is V_1". The outer circle has an arrow from the centre to its rim labelled r = d, and the text above it reads "V (r) at r = d is V_2". The outer circle is larger, so d > c. The region between the two shells is where V(r) is asked for.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Option (B): .

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EE (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. The shells are conductors, so any charge sits on their surfaces and the region contains no charge. The potential there therefore obeys Laplace's equation, . Because depends only on , in spherical coordinates this becomes

  2. Integrate once: is a constant. Call it , so . Integrating again gives where and are constants.

  3. Apply the boundary conditions: and .

  4. Subtract the second equation from the first: . Since , this gives

  5. Back-substitute into the second condition:

  6. So which is option (B).

  7. Check option (B) at both walls. At : . At : . Both conditions hold.

  8. The other options fail the same check. (A) does give at , but at it gives , not . (C) gives at . (D) gives at . Neither of the last two equals in general.

KEY IDEA

No charge sits between the shells, so obeys Laplace's equation. With spherical symmetry the general solution is , and the two shell potentials fix and . In an exam, the fastest route is to put and into each option. Only the correct expression gives and .

WATCH OUT FOR

Checking only one boundary. Option (A) also gives at , and fails only at , where it gives . Check both walls. Other slips are using the cylindrical solution instead of the spherical , and losing a sign when solving for .
