GATE 2022 · EEQ.23 · 1 mark · MCQ

A long conducting cylinder having a radius 'b' is placed along the z axis. The current density is for the region where is the distance in the radial direction. The magnetic field intensity () for the region inside the conductor (i.e. for ) is

Answer and solution

ANSWER

For , . The answer is option (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EE (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Symmetry. The current flows along and its density depends only on . So is purely azimuthal, , and has the same magnitude at every point of a circle of radius centred on the axis.

  2. Ampère's circuital law on a circle of radius : . Because is constant on the circle and parallel to , this gives .

  3. Enclosed current. The current density is not uniform, so integrate it over the disc of radius . The area element of a thin ring is :

  4. Solve for :

  5. Check with the point form . In cylindrical coordinates the -component is , which is the given .

  6. So inside the conductor . That is option (C).

KEY IDEA

When the current density varies with , find the enclosed current by integrating over thin rings of area . Then apply Ampère's law on a circle of radius : . A current density that goes as gives , so here () the result is .

WATCH OUT FOR

The first mistake is treating as uniform and writing . That gives . The second is leaving out the factor in the ring area , so that is integrated instead of . That gives . Neither result is an option, and option (A) pairs the power with the wrong factor . Option (D) is just the magnitude of , which mixes up the current density with the field it produces.
