The force per unit length between two infinitely long parallel conductors, with a gap of 2 cm between them is 10 N/m. When the gap is doubled, the force per unit length will be ________ N/m (rounded off to one decimal place).
GATE 2023 IN Q.27: solution and answer
Answer and solution
ANSWER
When the gap is doubled from 2 cm to 4 cm, the force per unit length halves: 5.0 μN/m.
Official answer: 4.9 to 5.1Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 IN (IIT Kanpur)
Field of one infinitely long conductor carrying current , at distance from it (Ampère's circuital law over a circle of radius ): Its direction is circumferential, so it is perpendicular to the second conductor.
Force on a length of the second conductor, carrying (Lorentz force , with ):
Only the gap changes; the currents , and stay the same. Therefore .
Take the ratio of the two cases:
Hence
KEY IDEA
The force per unit length between two long parallel currents is . The field of a long straight wire falls off as , not , so with the currents unchanged the force is inversely proportional to the separation.
WATCH OUT FOR
Treating the force like Coulomb's law between point charges, as , which gives 2.5 μN/m. The field of an infinitely long line current falls off as , so doubling the gap only halves the force. A second error is trying to find the actual currents: they are not needed, because only the ratio matters.
