Figure from the GATE 2023 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A 3-D sketch of a right-handed axis set. The z axis points up, the y axis points to the right and the x axis points toward the viewer (drawn going down to the lower left). A grey shaded parallelogram lies in the x-y plane (z = 0) and stands for the infinite current sheet. Parallel thin lines with arrowheads run across the sheet parallel to the x axis. The arrows point in the +x direction, toward the viewer. The sheet is labelled K = 5 a-hat_x. No dimensions or other charges or conductors are drawn. The field point (1,1,1) is given only in the text.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

. The field at is .

Official answer: 2.49 to 2.51Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EE (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Field of an infinite current sheet: apply Ampere's circuital law to a rectangular loop that straddles the sheet, with sides of length parallel to above and below the sheet. The enclosed current is , and by symmetry the field has the same magnitude on both sides, so . In vector form where is the unit normal pointing from the sheet toward the field point.

  2. The magnitude does not depend on the distance from the sheet, so only the side of the sheet matters. The point has , so .

  3. Cross product: , so

  4. Magnitude: . The and coordinates of the point make no difference.

KEY IDEA

An infinite sheet of surface current produces a uniform field on each side. Its magnitude is however far the point is from the sheet. The position of the point only sets the side of the sheet, and so the sign of the direction.

WATCH OUT FOR

A common error is to treat the sheet like a line current and let the field fall off with distance, for example by using the distance from the origin or from the plane. That gives a wrong magnitude. Another is to use (the field between two opposite sheets, or inside a solenoid) instead of . Getting backwards only flips the sign of . It does not change the magnitude.
