Answer and solution

ANSWER

The displacement current through the capacitor equals the conduction current through the resistor, . Option (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EC (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. No charge crosses the gap between the plates of an ideal capacitor, so the current "through" the capacitor is entirely displacement current: where is a surface lying in the gap.

  2. Continuity of total current: take the divergence of the Ampère–Maxwell law . Since , we get So the total current (conduction plus displacement) is the same through every cross-section of a single unbranched loop.

  3. In the series loop the resistor and the wires carry only conduction current, and the capacitor gap carries only displacement current. Series elements carry the same total current at every instant, so

  4. Check at one capacitor plate. If the plate holds charge , the wire's conduction current is . By Gauss's law, the flux of out of that plate into the gap is (for a parallel-plate capacitor, ). Hence , and in circuit terms both equal .

  5. The equality holds at every instant, so amplitude and phase are both unchanged: This is option (C).

KEY IDEA

Maxwell added displacement current so that total current is continuous: . In a series loop the conduction current in the wire and resistor carries on across the capacitor gap as displacement current . The two are equal at every instant, in both amplitude and phase.

WATCH OUT FOR

Picking (D) because "no charge flows through the dielectric". That is true of conduction current, but it is exactly why the gap current is all displacement current, and that current is not zero. Another mistake is picking (A) or (B) by carrying over the 90° voltage–current phase shift of a capacitor. That shift is between the capacitor's voltage and its current. The resistor current and the capacitor current in a series loop are the same current and have no phase difference.
