GATE 2022 EC question 53: Cartesian axes: a horizontal x-axis and a vertical y-axis, each with arrows at both ends.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2022 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Cartesian axes: a horizontal x-axis and a vertical y-axis, each with arrows at both ends. The shaded triangle has vertices at (0, 0), (4, 4) and (4, -4). Its sides are the line from (0,0) to (4,4) (y = x), the line from (0,0) to (4,-4) (y = -x), and the vertical segment x = 4 from (4,-4) up to (4,4). The labels (0, 4) and (0, -4) sit to the left of the y-axis. A dotted horizontal line runs from each of these points on the y-axis through the vertex (4, 4) or (4, -4) and a short way past it. The origin is labelled (0, 0). The triangle lies in the right half-plane and is symmetric about the x-axis.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Official answer: 512Source: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EC (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Describe the region. The triangle has vertices , and . The line bounds it above, the line bounds it below, and the line closes it on the right. Cut it into vertical strips: for each with , runs from to .

  2. Set up the iterated integral. The integrand is continuous on this closed, bounded region, so by Fubini's theorem we can integrate over first:

  3. Inner integral in . The integrand is even in and the limits are symmetric, so

  4. Multiply by the constant 3. .

  5. Outer integral in .

  6. Answer. The value is exactly , so rounding changes nothing: .

KEY IDEA

Read the region off the figure and slice it the easy way. With vertical strips, the triangle bounded by , and becomes , , and one iterated integral covers it. Horizontal strips would split it at into two pieces. The integrand is even in and the region is symmetric about the x-axis, so the inner integral is twice the integral from to .

WATCH OUT FOR

Integrating over only the upper half, , gives 256. So does integrating over the whole triangle and forgetting the factor 3 in front (that also gives 256, and 256/3 if only one of the two errors is made). Another slip is using in place of . Some students also try polar coordinates, where becomes for . That leads to a harder integral with more chances to go wrong.
