Let . Which of the following cannot be a value of ?
- (A)
- (B)
- (C)
- (D)
Let . Which of the following cannot be a value of ?
ANSWER
(A) cannot be a value of . Its fourth power is , not . The four fourth roots of are , , and , and options (B), (C) and (D) are three of them.
Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EC (IIT Kanpur)
Write the right-hand side in polar form: . The argument is fixed only up to multiples of , so in general for any integer .
Take fourth roots (De Moivre's theorem for -th roots):
List the four roots. They lie on the circle , spaced apart:
Match the options: (B) is , (C) is and (D) is . The argument in (A) differs from by , which is not a multiple of , so (A) is not one of the roots.
Check (A) directly: . So (A) cannot be a value of .
KEY IDEA
The -th roots of are for . They sit on a circle of radius , spaced apart. For that means radius , starting angle and spacing . Any option whose angle is not plus a multiple of is not a root, and raising it to the fourth power confirms this.
WATCH OUT FOR
A common mistake is to take the argument of as instead of , or to divide only the principal argument by 4 and forget the spacing. Either slip gives the wrong set of roots, and then (A), with angle , looks like a valid root. Another slip is to read "cannot be" as "can be" and pick (B), the principal root.
