ANSWER
The rate of change is , which rounds to 0.
Official answer: 0 to 1Source: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EE (IIT Roorkee)
The rate of change of a scalar field in a given direction is the directional derivative , where is a unit vector along that direction.
Gradient: .
At the origin: .
The direction from the origin towards the point is , with , so .
Directional derivative:
Rounded to the nearest integer, as the question asks: .
KEY IDEA
"Rate of change in a direction" means the directional derivative: the gradient dotted with the unit vector pointing from the given point towards the target point. Here and , which gives .
WATCH OUT FOR
Skipping the normalisation and computing , or answering with the maximum rate (the rate along the gradient, not towards ). A directional derivative is a rate per unit distance, so the direction vector has to be a unit vector. The correct value is , which rounds to 0. The key's range of 0 to 1 happens to accept 1 as well, but only 0 follows from the definition.
